NEW YORK — The FDNY Vulcan Society, New York City’s fraternal organization of Black Firefighters, today endorsed Melissa Mark-Viverito for Public Advocate. In their endorsement, they praised Mark-Viverito’s commitment to gender equality and racial justice and her work to increase the number of women and people of color in the FDNY.
“The FDNY Vulcan Society is proud to endorse Melissa Mark-Viverito for Public Advocate. As the first female president of the Vulcan Society, I know what it’s like to break barriers. Not only is Melissa a history maker herself as the first Latina Speaker of the City Council, she has always been dedicated to fighting for gender equity in male dominated fields. As Speaker, she passed a law to require the FDNY to report on the number of women and minorities hired each year. Her steadfast commitment to racial justice and gender equality will make her an incredible Public Advocate for all of us,” said Regina Wilson, Immediate Past President of the Vulcan Society.
“I am truly honored to receive the endorsement of the FDNY Vulcan Society. As Speaker, I passed a bill to require the FDNY to report on the gender and racial demographics of its applicants in an effort to push for more diversity in hiring. Diversity in all professions and workplaces is essential—and as Public Advocate, I will continue to stand up for racial and gender equality, and fight to protect the rights of all New Yorkers,” said Public Advocate candidate Melissa Mark-Viverito.
